The Patriarch Wildlife Sanctuary, run by a trust, is on the east coast of Flinders Island. Facilities there include a free gas BBQ, with picnic tables, toilets, shower and A-Frame shelter with bunk beds. The area is spacious with plenty of camping sites close by. The Sanctuary attracts many day-use visitors due to its abundant wildlife, which enjoy being fed using the pellets just inside the A-Frame building.
You will need to be self-sufficient, bringing your own drinking water and firewood. Please take care with fire. In summer seek out fire restrictions from the local ranger. Keep any fires to a minimum using only dead and fallen wood. Always ensure that your fire is fully out before leaving it.
Surrounding three granite hills on the island’s eastern flanks, the forests, lagoons and swamps of this sanctuary offer unspoiled wildlife habitat and a chance to get to know Flinders Island’s unique animals.
Attractions include fantastic nature walks and spotting the refuge’s wallabies, wombats and Cape Barren geese.
Access is 6 km east along Lees Rd from Lackrana Rd. Note: the access track can be boggy after rain.
